Beyond Common Sense: Mastering the Socratic Method to Think for Yourself
The main premise of the Socratic Method is that good ideas come with alot of thought. And included 5 steps:
1. Look around around for ideas that most people think are common sense. (e.g. The best jobs pay well, or happiness comes from being married)
2. Try to find an acceptation. (Ralph and Mary are married and have great jobs, but are still unhappy)
3. If an example is found, that means the statement is false or at least imprecise.
4. Put in nuance... (Your job pays well but it's not fulfilling. You have an unhappy marriage because your partner doesn't give attention to your wants and needs.)
5. Continue process as long as possible and continue to find acceptions to your common sense statements. (The best jobs allow individuals to be happy at work and when away. A happy marriage comes when both partners understand and fulfill each-others wants and needs)
The truth lies in a statement that cannot be disproved.
This allows us to present a logical explaination when people ask about our beleifs. And, if they ignore our logic, their opposition won't unnerve us so badly.
